Giles, fighting for a cause

Several lines later Miller uses his own summary to depict the character of Giles Corey. Miller refers to Giles as a ".crank and a nuisance."(p38) This quote shows the towns disrespectful and bitter feelings about Giles. Further in his synopsis of Giles, Miller gives an insight into Giles believes. Miller states that, "[Giles] didn't care a hoot for public opinion."(p38) Miller states Giles" beliefs in order to show the lack of sympathy he shared with the community as well as his selfish ideology. After the first act the crowd begins to identify Giles as a selfish, immature, distant member of Salem who will undoubtedly get into trouble. .
Towards the middle of the play Giles begins to recognize problems in the community causing a change in his beliefs. In scene two Giles along with other members of the community are arguing about the accusations made by Abigail and the girls. There Giles responds to the accusations, "It is fraud, you know it is fraud! What keeps you, man?"(p75) Giles" response shows how he is recognizing that the girls are merely acting and making false accusations in the town. Furthermore, the audience sees their first image of Giles recognizing there is a fault in the town. As more accusations and fictitious evidence are made Giles begins to wonder about the sanity of his community. In response he looks at John Proctor and asks, "John-tell me, are we lost?"(p77) Giles leaves the room shaken after saying these words in desperation. Giles" words show how he believes the town has gone to chaos and how accusations are being thrown around with little regard for evidence or feelings. As the third scene begins Giles is in court arguing for his wife's freedom. There in court Giles replies to the indictments as being " lies, lies!"(p80) His remarks are in reference to the evidence brought against him and his wife. These words are his last cry for hope to showing the judge the stupidity of these proceedings.
