Huck decides to venture around the island, after the search parties had done, went past him. On the island he found a campsite, and later found out it was Jim's. He fixes Jim some dinner, and the two of them tell their reasons for being on the island. Huck decided to help Jim get to freedom. When Huck learns some people are coming to the island in search of Jim, the two of them jump in the boat, and take off.
They float down the river on their raft, stopping occasionally to "borrow," as they said, fruits and chickens. Huck wanted to stop on a wrecked steamship, and loot it. He found two men trying to kill another, when he fled he took their raft, because his got loose. Down the river a short way he began to feel really bad, because all of the men could die because of him. He stopped by a ship to get someone to get them off the boat, to clear his conscious but it was too late.
Huck and Jim get separated in a storm, and when Huck finds Jim, he plays a trick on him. The trick hurts Jim's feelings, and Huck feels really bad. Huck humbles himself to Jim. At that point Huck didn't care that he humbled himself to a "nigger." Jim speaks more vividly about freedom now, and he was going to save up to buy his wife, and steal his children back. Huck begins to realize he had done wrong, by helping Jim escape. Huck starts to think about Miss Watson, and how she tried to help him, but all he did in return was to help her slave run away. He decided to roll over on Jim to help clear his conscious, but when the opportunity arose, he instead helped Jim.
Late one night a ship ran over them, and Huck thought he lost Jim. A family took him in after he told a pack of lies. He retrieved a book for one of the girls that had a note inside. Huck found Jim, and was planning on leaving. Before he could, the family got into a war with another family, because one of the families" daughter ran off, and married the other's son.
