And lastly, Eli Whitney started mass production of cotton in the United States. As a result the United States is the largest cotton producer in the world.

mother. At the age of twenty-one he took a trip to England to study with the famous artist Benjamin West. Fulton was able to make a fine living for himself in London. When he was in London Fulton became interested in scientific and engineering developments. Later in his life he gave himself more fully to this field, and painting was now for his amusement only. He constantly traveled. He kept on studying higher mathematics, and science, and also learned how to speak three different languages fluently French, Italian, and German.
Fulton was also studying boats in his free time. He was very interested in the idea of steam propulsion for a boat. Fulton wanted to further develop canals. He began to design new types of canal boats, and inclined planes which replaced canal locks.
