John Steinbeck stated, "The writer is charged with exposing our many grievous faults and failures, with dredging up to the light our dark and dangerous dreams for the purpose of improvement." In other words, it is the writers job to point out human flaws, bad qualities,so we readers can see how to avoid the same mistakes. I agree with this statement John Steinbeck has made. .
In "Of Mice and Men", by John Steinbeck, he shows us mistakes that were made and what resulted in them so we do not make the same ones.
Crooks, a black guy who works on the ranch has to live everyday with being discriminated against because of his race. He is not alowed to be in the same place as the rest of the white guys. He has his own bunk house which he sleeps in and hangs out in by himself everyday and night. He is forbidden to hang out with or even go in the bunk house with the rest of the white guys even though he is educated. Also, Crooks is very threatened by Curleys wife. If he talks or even looks at her he has a fear that she will go to Curley (the boss) and tell him lies like he hurt or even raped her. If this were to occur Curley would have no doubts or second thoughts on the matter. He would immediatly take action even if the information was false. This could happen that esily because she is a white female and he is a black male. Crooks is a very bitter and lonley guy because of the way he is treated. If he was treated fairly or even had a friend to talk to he would be a much different person.
Curleys wife is the only women living on the ranch with the workers. She is not allowed to be in the guys bunk house and is not even supposed to talk to them and vise versa. The guys on the ranch are scared to talk or even look at her because they fear what Curley will think or say. She has no name, she is practically owned by her husband, Curley. She also, is very lonely. No one pays attention to her because they know it will get them into trouble with Curley and they look at her as a "tart".
