Holden wasn't too keen on Ackley, who was arrogant and quite rude at times. Ackley had just taken a shower when he walked into Holden's" room and started with his usual behavior, looking through other peoples belongings and generally "being in the way". Holden stops what he is doing and speaks to Ackley for a while until Stradlater walked in asking about if he could borrow one of Holden's" jackets and wanting to shave. Ackley leaves and Holden is left alone in the room with Stradlater.
Chapter 4.
In chapter four we read about the conversation between Stradlater and Holden in the bathroom, while Stradlater is shaving and trying to make himself look as good as possible for his date. At first the conversation doesn't really interest Holden. Stradlater asks him to write a descriptive composition for him while Holden is entertaining himself by tap-dancing and "horsing-around". It is not until he finds out that Stradlater's date is Jane Gallagher that he is actually interested in asking more questions. Jane was a girl he spent a lot of time with two summers ago. He recalled a lot of interesting details about her and her childhood. He was going to go downstairs and say hello but he got nervous and stayed in his room, where he thought about he for about half an hour until Ackley walked in and took his mind off her. .
Chapter 5.
In the fifth chapter of this book, the narrator describes his Saturday evening after eating the standard Saturday dinner of steak, mashed potatoes and a dessert of something called a Betty Brown. He claims this dinner is made to sound nice for the parents that visited on Sundays, but really wasn't that nice. After that he went to eat hamburgers and play with the pinball machine with Ackley and another boy from the room next to his called Mal Brossard. After going home and getting rid of Ackley he sat down to write the descriptive composition for Stradlater. He decided to write about his brother Allie's, who died of leukemia, baseball mitt that Allie had written poems all over.
