The struggle between the self and the other

"[3] These two men take long walks together in which neither of them speak. For them reputation is very important, thus they act as if they ignore the truth for the sake of reputation. It is same for Jekyll, because as a doctor he must keep his reputation and be successful, helpful, kind and he should dedicate his life for the others. .
Dr Jekyll lives in a luxurious house with good furniture, and his house shows how much good taste of art he has. Sometimes he has some guests in his house, and he is very hospitable. However he hires a house for Hyde in an area in which lower class people live. Jekyll lives a very disrespectful and immoral life when he becomes Hyde and the house he has chosen is very suitable for his aims. Jekyll forgets about any kind of values, mores and rules that are very important for him when he is Jekyll, and the reason that makes him so is the repression of society. The strong concept of morality led him to try a new life style without any morals and values. He understands that it was wrong, but it is too late and he suffers a lot because of his wrong choice.
When we look at the film Fight Club which takes place in 20th century America it shows "how consumerism has caused the emasculation of the modern male and tells a tale of liberation from a corporate controlled society"[4] In the film we see a man, Jack played by Edward Norton, works for a very respectable car manufacturer company. He earns enough money to lead a comfortable life, he can afford expensive cloths and furniture. However there is something missing in his life. He is not happy or satisfied with the things he owns, because all the things he owned begin to own him and he feels uneasy without knowing the reason of it. He joins some groups in which people suffering from testicle cancer come together to release their sorrow. He joins such groups in order to feel pain, because he thinks that in this way the meaninglessness of his life will disappear.
