Character Analysis of Estella from Great Expectations

, edited by D. L. Kirkpatrick, St. James Press, 1991). Three aspects of Great Expectations will be discussed in this essay: Estella's relationship to Pip and vice versa Estella's importance to Pip's receipt/acceptance to Great Expectations, and lastly a theme represented by Estella will all be analyzed in this essay.
Estella and Pip had a relationship that experienced many odd twists and turns. Estella started out not liking Pip, but as the book progressed, she began to like him more and more. They met each other because Ms. Havisham invited Pip to come "play" at her estate. When Pip first came, she disliked him and called him a "common boy" because Ms. Havisham told her to reject all men. Throughout the book, Estella hints to Pip that she likes him; there are several such occasions. First, at the dance Pip sees Estella flirting with all the men there except Pip, he asks her why and she asks him if he wants her to deceive him too. This shows that Estella not only likes Pip, but also does not direct her training towards Pip. Second, Estella breaks up with Drummel and leaves to find Pip to comfort her. Pip's relationship to Estella was always that Pip treated her as if she was royalty until he got older and near the end. Pip had always tried to get Estella's attention throughout the book, this is one of the reasons that Pip decided to accept his Great Expectations. As the book progressed, the two became closer and spent more time with each other. Their relationship develops as the book does and goes from one treating the other like dirt to a mutual caring friendship.
Estella played important roles in Pip's acceptance and being to chosen to receive Great Expectations, without her, Pip" may have been more reluctant to accept the Great Expectations and he most likely would not have been chosen. For Pip accepting his Great Expectations, if Estella had not been in the book, he would be more reluctant to accept his Great Expectations.
