Tennis

 

            Tennis is a sport that many people have been enjoying for many centuries .
             Over the last eight centuries before modern tennis was invented there was only one game called Tennis. As the popularity of the modern game increased, there had to be a name to distinguish "old tennis" from the new tennis. Real Tennis was the name they used in the UK, Court Tennis in the USA, and Royal Tennis in Australia. The game originated in France in the 12th century and was called "jes de paume," the game of the palm, played with the bare hand. As early as the 12th century, a glove was used to protect the hand. Starting in the 16th century and continuing until the middle of the 18th century, rackets of many shapes and sizes were used. Around 1750, the racket with the oval shape head and long and thick handle were used. The shape of the racket enabled the player to scoop balls out of the corners walls and floor were considered in-bounds and also to put cut or spin on the ball. Royalty and the very wealthy people played the game. Balls of the early days of tennis were made of leather stuffed with wool or hair. They were hard enough to cause injury and even death. And then in 18th century they started to use wool, lowering the risk of injury, and so more people would play. With many people playing tennis it showed a great increase of weight loss. With the increase of weight loss even those who are known as couch potatoes, would start playing. They said it didn't make them loose there breath like other sports did and when they didn't loose there breath they would be imagining losing all those pounds of weight in front of the television set. Knowing that would never happen they continued playing, bring pleasure of playing tennis and sweating and having fun, regardless of ones strength, age, size or shape. So why do many people either like to play or watch tennis? .
             Maybe it is a way to release tension, or not only is it a physical exercise it is enjoyment? What ever the reason is many more people are playing tennis there days.
