Satire

The two brothers are found innocent at their trial showing that the people of their town will approve of even murder if it is in the name of honor. In Montiel's Widow the legal system is made a mockery of because Montiel made his money by "monopolizing local business through terror" (118). Once he died his wife was robbed daily to the point that they would just say " Again the bandits"(119).
Religion is made fun of in the portrayal of all religious figures in Chronicle of a Death Foretold, as well as the fact that Santiago himself is portrayed by Marquez as a Christ figure. Garcia Marquez's portrays Santiago Nasar as a Christ figure, an innocent man who is sacrificed for the sins of others. The choice of Nasar as a kind of Christ is ironic, since Nasar himself is far from pure, spending time at the whorehouse and molesting young servant girls. As Divina Flor told the narrator " He grabbed my whole pussy". However, Nasar is no more corrupt than the other members of his village, who do not stop his murder even though they all are aware that it is about to take place because of their respect for the honor system. In addition everyone gets ready for the annual visit to the town by the bishop. Yet when the bishop's ship arrives, he doesn't even get off it, but rather he offers his blessings a couple hundred yards off shore and then keeps going! All the preparations of the townspeople for nothing. What's even more humorous is the fact that the bishop did the same thing to them last year. The people of the town feel obliged to honor and offer gifts to a bishop that doesn't even like the town. Perhaps it is because they fear if they do not keep their faith, they are putting in jeopardy their fate after death. This is the primary concern of all religions, life after death and fear of the unknown. Finally, In such a religious town there was a brothel or whorehouse . Their reasoning I guess is that if the sexually active men of the town are satisfied by a handful of whores, then the village "virgins" are safe until marriage.
