(Lead In) We live in a society that believes in morals and ethics. Our society grants us all an equal opportunity to chose how to live our lives. Many Americans believe that the death penalty is wrong. However, the supporters feel the death penalty is a just and proper way to handle convicted murders.(Thesis) The death penalty seems to be a cost efficient and just way to punish violent criminals for their crimes, yet others feel it is inhumane do so. (Essay Map) Supporters of the death penalty feel that it saves the costs incurred during lifetime imprisonment and deters repeat heinous crimes. Opponents believe not only are those untrue but that it is cruel and each human, no matter how heinous deserves the right to live.
(Topic Sentence) A vast misconception concerning the death penalty is that is saves society the costs of keeping inmates imprisoned for a long period of time, that's what the opponents are saying. In the act of preserving due process of justice, the court appeals involved with the death penalty becomes long, drawn-out and very expensive. The supporters think that if you put a criminal to death then no legal services are necessary and then we do not have the expense of housing and well-being care. The truth is the average time between sentencing and execution for an average of 31 prisoners put on death row in one year is 114 months or nine and a half years. Therefore, criminal justice process expenses, trial court costs, appellate and post-conviction costs, and prison costs perhaps including years served on death row awaiting execution average out to more than a quarter of a million dollars and each execution exceeds an average two million dollars. When you compare this to the average costs for a twenty-year prison term for first-degree murder (approximately 330 thousand), the cost of putting someone away for life is a deal! Is it really worth the hassle and money to kill a criminal, when we can put them away for life for less money and a great deal more ease?.
