Inate Evil

 

Perhaps Caroline could have tried to work out a plan where she w ould have some role in the farm to make her father happy. Instead she puts her father out of her life because she wants only to satisfy her own needs. Caroline's uncontrollable ambition allows her desire to be a lawyer control her life and sacrifices a po ssibility for a better relationship with Larry. .
             Similar to those of Caroline, some of Ty's dreams also end up hurting loved ones. Ty dreams of owning this farm to which he feels entitled. He has finally achieved this goal when Larry gives up the farm. Later on in the novel, Rose and Ginny fight with Larry which results in his desire to take the farm back. Instead of siding with his wife, Ty blames the loss on her and her sister. After the possible loss of the farm, he states, "I was working around your father! I was bringing him into things bit by b it. I never thought it would be easy, but I thought I was making progress, and then you women just wrecked it, you just got him all fired up-"{261) Because Ty has such a desire to win the farm, he will sacrifice his relationship with Ginny to accomplish t his goal. He blames the loss on Ginny and loses sight of his love for her solely because he wants the farm more than anything. All of the characters do not set out to hurt others. They generally have good intentions, for ambition can be a positive charact eristic. Yet when they put this ambition over their family, they start having problems. At this point the evil in their personalities emerges. Unfortunately, ambition blinds these characters and they cannot see the harm they cause their families at the sa me time. Their greed eventually destroys the family because without the ability to cooperate and work together, these individuals cannot live together. Similar to Larry, King Lear had ambition, for even after he gave up his kingdom he still wanted power. Yet because he could not try and work out a plan to share the land with his daughters instead of demanding it all for himself, the evil in his personality arises.
