Back at Candelo, Vi and Ursula continued to wait for Simon, Mitchell and Evie to come home. It was getting dark and there was no sign of them yet. As time passed Vi became increasingly worried and anxious. (pg 214 - 216).
Ursula replayed in her mind the events of earlier that day. She continued rewriting the story until it was strong enough to be held up in one piece. Ursula was convinced that she loved Mitchell and he loved her back - And that's the way it was. (pg 214).
The police then arrived and delivered the shocking news that there had been an accident. As Vi left with the police, Ursula was left alone in the house, while somewhere, out on the empty road, they carried Evie's body up from where the car had rolled. (pg 217).
This was all Ursula knew; Not much, but enough for me to believe the picture that was presented to me. To hold it as truth. Mitchell was drunk. The car rolled. And Evie was dead. - Each stark fact. (pg 217).
With this shocking news Ursula was hysterical, screaming at Simon as Vi tried to comfort her - Simon slamming the front door, walking off into the night. (pg 217 - 218).
After Mitchell's funeral, Simon sits by the side of road, head buried in his hands'. Simon speaks. "Can't you see? It wasn't Mitchell driving. It was me."" (pg 218).
             Chapter 36 pages 219 - 223 .
Anton and Louise are moving and Ursula is not at all surprised at this but is by the fact that she did not know. (pg 219).
Ursula had avoided Anton and they hardly ever spoke anymore, and as for Louise the two had not spoken - not since the afternoon of the funeral. (pg 219).
Ursula recalls how when it began with Anton, I never thought about how it would affect her (Louise). I never let myself see her as a person. (pg 220).
Ursula also realises that it was not just her that I failed to see. She would listen to Anton telling her of his numerous, impossible love affairs but Ursula refused to see herself as the next in line.
