Even more significant is the indication that the world's climate is not only becoming warmer, but also drier.
             Critics of the global warming concept point out that significant climate change has occurred throughout geologic time. If global warming is in fact occurring, they argue, it may have nothing to do with human activity. Others argue that historic climate reports are not proven to be accurate, so we cannot be sure that present-day temperatures are really higher. .
             Whether or not one accepts the idea that the Earth is becoming significantly warmer, it has been shown that human effects can alter the Earth's climate at a local level. An example is desertification, the process in which arid, infertile conditions arise in a region that previously was not desert. This is known to have occurred in areas of former grassland or shrubland, when the land was overgrazed by domestic animals kept by humans. .
             The implications of a warmer, drier earth are not known at this point. But it is inevitable that major climatic changes would have profound effects on the living world.
