a brief definition of friend

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them." My personal opinion is that a friend is someone that will be there at anytime and is person that I can share my inner thoughts with. Many people are just acquaintances, yet they call it friendship; true friends know the difference. In the dictionary, "friendship" is defined as, "the state of being friend, and the quality or state of being friendly: friendliness." In my opinion, friendship means so much more than what the Webster Dictionary defines to us. .
Luckily, I have been blessed with a friend that understands me sometime more than I understand myself. We have been friends for eighteen years, and each day we are learning more about each other. Both times I found out I was going to have a child there was no doubt in my mind that she would be their Godmother. She is the one person I trust to take care of my children, if anything was to happen to me. I can honestly say she is a true friend, just the fact that she would put a halt in her own life in order to take on a responsibility from my life. .
I have also had a bad encounter with a friend from high school. Our friendship was the type that drove parents crazy; marathon phone conversations, laughing till we were about to urinate, and taking every advantage of being a teenager. For some reason she stopped talking to me, and our friendship slowly vanished. It bothered me a lot because I considered her to be a true friend. I still don't know the real reason behind the ending of our friendship. The one thing that I learned from that friendship was that as you grow older your friends change because of different views.
Helen Killer quoted, "Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light." That quote is very true in many different ways. In my experiences with both good and bad friendships, I would have rather a friend with me at the time instead of being alone.
