            Trace the downfall of Macbeth from "Valiant cousin, worthy gentleman" (Act 1 scene 2) to .

             Macbeth is of one of the greatest tragedies of all time. William Shakespeare wrote it by request for King James I. The King strongly believed in witchcraft, and Shakespeare used this idea to appeal to him. Macbeth turns from a brave soldier to a tyrannical murderer and his loyal friend Banquo is illustrated as a trustworthy person who is loyal to his king, this was Shakespeare's intention as he wanted to impress the King who in reality was a descendant of Banquo. .
             Macbeth is a very ambitious character and his ambitious could be the reason for his downfall. However there are many elements present which contributed towards his downfall. In this essay I will trace Macbeth's downfall and examine them. I will also try and figure out who can be held responsible for this declining state of mind. .
             At the beginning of the play Macbeth is constantly being praised by his wounded captain who fought alongside him in the battle, he is referred to being brave. Macbeth is referred to as.
             "brave Macbeth - well he deserves that name".
             And is honoured to be addressed as "valiant cousin, worthy gentlemen" by his king.
             Macbeth is notably a hero at this point, he is the Thane of Glamis and is promoted to Thane of Cawdor and is the brave soldier that defeated the traitor Macdonwald in battle. .
             Macbeth's downfall begins from the moment he had an unusual meeting with the three witches from the beginning of the play. Here he is told that he will be the King of Scotland by the witches and from that point his ambition and evil nature becomes apparent to the reader as he says in an aside,.
             "Glamis, and Thane of Cawdor;.
             The greatest is behind." (I,III,116).
             It seems as though Macbeth is already brewing up some plan to aid him to fulfil his desire to be king. .
             Macbeth is taking into account the prophecies told by the witches, he is weighing up the pros and cons of this, which could be due to him yearning to be king, as he says,.
