He kneels in the bottom of his foxhole and burns the letters from Martha. Then he burns the photos (446). He thinks to himself, "Lavender is dead. You couldn't burn the blame" (446). This shows his caring side and also the guilt he has. It shows caring because he is giving up his love for his troops well-being. He does not want anymore of his men to die and he will do anything in his power to try and prevent that from happening.
Ted Lavender carried all the necessities as well. The things he carries that are standard issue weigh between 15 and 20 pounds. Lavender is probably the most scared of dying. Some of his necessities for survival include tranquilizers and premium grade marijuana (436). The largest item that Lavender carries with him is the fear of dying. He fears dying more than anyone else because he feels that he needs tranquilizers to get him through each day alive. It was typical for a soldier to carry 25 rounds of ammunition but for Ted Lavender it was necessity to carry 34 rounds on the day he died. He carried more than 20 pounds of ammunition, a flak jacket, a helmet, rations, and tranquilizers, plus the unweighed fear (438). This was a large burden but he carried it out of the fear of dying. Even on the day of his death Lavender felt it necessary to take a tranquilizer before he went off to pee (440). This showed that his fear was so great that he had to take a tranquilizer to do even the smallest of things. He died not expecting to be shot but yet not caring if he was. Being the lonely, scared man that he was he was kind of wanting to be shot when he took that tranquilizer. He was hoping he would not see it coming and that he would be completely relaxed. He was and he died a humiliating death; he died while urinating.
The other soldiers carry all of the usual equipment that they are required to carry but also they carry what keeps them comfortable. They all also carry the fear of dying which Cross and Lavender carried as well.
