This expresses she cares about her country and has faith in her people. She hopes her country will one day overcome the war. Frank uses declarative sentences in order to convey the importance of independence, thus creating a strong attitude to her people's (country's) faith and religion.              In contrast to extract 1, extract 2 has a similar structure. However the context surrounding it is different as it is affected by social influences instead of historical. The context is set out in a mental institution, where the connotations are sadness and oppression. Alice dislikes the institution and when describing it, she uses a negative tone and expresses it using figurative language. She relates the institution to a prison, where every night the attendants "locked the huge heavy door". This creates the image of being trapped and behind bars. Alice's description of the attendants all wearing "heavy clanking keys" makes the reader almost feel her emotions as a "continual depressing reminder". Alice says she is beginning to "drag and merely exist" as she has often "cried in her sleep". This creates the image her shocking way of life. We are encouraged to see the situation through Alice's eyes and feel the same she does. Her life is viewed as disturbing, thus we feel sympathy for her.
In extract 1, Frank's intention of writing a diary was to be discovered and published for all to see. Her diary was written detailing the historical events of her time, as well as a vast way of communication and keeping herself sane from the pressures of the war. Frank gives a vivid description of her surroundings and feelings encountered during her ordeal. Frank creates an image of the living conditions as disturbing and uncomfortable. She expresses bitter anger when there is a shortage of food as she yells in the imperative "New butter and margarine rationing at table!" This shows the suffering Frank has endured from the effects of war and she is demanding more food for her family.
