Invisble Man

 

At the paint factory when he walks in on the black union members, he never questions why he is being called a fink. Instead he stands afraid looking and listening to the man shout.
             The narrator finally asks the question "why?- after his adventures with the Brotherhood. After all his hard work and dedication, he figures out he is being used. He asks why he wasn't informed of the meeting. He thinks he is a vital member of the Brotherhood. "You were not hired to think- (469). These are the words of the leader of the Brotherhood and the narrator begins to figure out a black person's role in the Brotherhood- not to think but to do as the committee tells him. The narrator finds out that he his only a puppet of the Brotherhood. He stands up for himself while being badgered by Brother Tobbit and other members of the Brotherhood. .
             The narrator's outlook on life does a drastic turnaround during the course of this novel. He aspires to be the next Booker T. Washington. He really doesn't see how racist whites in the south are. The narrator does not recognize the truths behind others dishonest behavior and tries to fulfill their misguided expectations. His view becomes clearer when he has an encounter with a vet at the Golden Day, an African American bar. He believes every word that Dr. Bledsoe is saying and travels to New York blindly. He has ambitions of returning back to college. He does not even take a look at the papers that he was given by Bledsoe which turn out to be false. " The bearer of this letter is a former student of ours (and I say former because he shall never be, under and circumstances, be enrolled as a student here again) - (190). The narrator is on a path finding out that he has to look out for himself. " There is no point in blinding yourself to the truth. Don't blind yourself - (192). After the narrator's episode with the Brotherhood and the riot he realizes that he must find his own ideology on society.
