Every time a new technology was added to an organization in an effort to increase productivity, the risk of causing more problems increased. Causes of stress brought on by new technology implementation are absenteeism, turnover, and an increase in stress related to health care costs. The uses of information and communication technology such as the Internet, cell phones, and video conferencing have caused many changes in society. These changes have not just affected organizations, but have affected the structure of society as well. The emergent of new technology have also impacted the way we live out our daily lives. .
My Internet article review consisted of the study made by journalism faculty members of how stress was prevalent in their jobs due to the technological changes. Most faculty members experienced technological stress, but only about half felt they encountered more stress than five years ago. Most journalism educators basically had positive feelings about the technology in their classrooms, but with new technology, they suffered added stress (Beam). .
The study discovered that journalism professors felt technology was their greatest form of stress. During the stress study, there were differences in relation to men and women. It was hard for men to accept change and initiated support from technical staff better than women. Women needed further training in new technologies than men. Women's tech related stress increased over the last five years compared to men. Also, women desired more perfection in their work than men and worried more about their work being acceptable compared to men (Beam). .
Aside from gender, the nature of the teaching load was highly correlated with technology-induced stress. Those whose teaching load was dominated by skills courses, instead of conceptual courses, were more likely to experience this tech-stress. Other factors such as age, years teaching college, faculty rank, and number of courses taught per year were inspected for added stress, but were found to be of no relation.
