Walking down the high school hallway, one can observe a broad spectrum of dress, but is there one particular image that could be considered more appealing than the rest? There are always different styles of dress for each social group. Each set of friends finds one set of dress more acceptable than the rest. Some groups may choose to wear tight jeans, revealing shirts, lots of make-up, and their hair may always lay perfectly. Another group may wear dark colors, chains, odd hair styles that may appear to be out of place, nail polish (both guys and girls), large cleat-like boots, and lots of hair gel. Should these two groups care about how people view them?.
Wearing all black clothing, baggy clothes, and riske nail polish could give off a wrong image to onlookers. Wearing tight jeans, mid-drifts, and having well groomed qualities may appear very appealing to onlookers, but is it the correct image?.
Self image is a huge issue in American culture. Perhaps it is so big an issue that it is blown entirely out of proportion. Typically, Americans dress towards what society will view as acceptable without giving themselves the chance to answer one very important question: Is this me? Too often, teens lose their own image to pop culture. Finding one's image is the most important thing a teenager, kid, or adult, can do for one's self. Portraying who one is speaks the most in the clothes one wears and how one carries his/her self. .
One can easily wear what pop culture advocates, but how one wears it is a different story. By not allowing one's self to fall into the stereotypical role of a pop icon wanna-be, everyone should let their personalities shine through the clothing. Even though personality is the most important thing to portray, dressing for the occasion can also become an issue. When attending a formal dinner, one should wear formal dress rather than jeans and a tee-shirt.
