Substitution happens when there is no verbal language at all. For example, you are on a bus with your friend and another passenger who is not very clean, you pinch your nose to let your friend know the person smells bad. Regulation is used to monitor and control interactions with others. For example, you are into a disagreement with your son and you start to walk away shaking your head. (Judy Pearson, et al pp104).
I work in an industry that relies on non-verbal skills in almost every asset of the job. I am a truck driver first of all and I am on the road 7 to 10 hours a day. I am consistently dealing with other motorist .For the most part the majority of motorist are very considerate, thier are those 1, 2 or 10 that really do not know the meaning of good citizen. As a driver, I have become rather knowledgeable of non-verbal driver moves other drivers make.A system that has been used by the trucking industry for years is a defensive driver-training program known as the Smith System. It is a program where you learn to look at all conditions on the road through what is called sensory perception. The Smith System is also known as aim high steering. This is where drivers pay close attention to body movements of both drivers and pedestrians.and vehicle conditions. In the warehouse we are moving heavy items such as windows and siding when we see other people doing some moving, on instinct we know if that person is going left or right. In addition, if the contractors are working on the south side of the house and they are not finished you back your truck up and set the siding at that point, where they are working.
There are so many people in my industry you have to be aware of. You need to know the moods whose schedule you can alter and whose schedule you cannot. I have had customers who say they want a item by a certain time and I respond with a different answer they grimace or frown.
