Religious Beliefs

Although they are both Protestants, Oliver Cromwell and Charles I both had different points of view towards religious beliefs. Cromwell belongs to a religious group called the Puritans, which are the opposite of the Anglicans. They preferred to live a plain, and sober life because they disapproved of drinking and gambling. Even their church services were very simple. As well, their clothing was dark and plain. They thought that art and decorations are associated with the Roman Catholic Church, and eliminated all decorations from the Puritan church. Puritans believed that everyone's life should be devoted entirely to God, and that stern laws are to be followed to keep people from sinning. On the other hand, Charles I was an Anglican and was the total opposite of Cromwell. The church services for the Anglicans were much fancier. They collected taxes from them, and they were conducted in English. The Puritans disliked the Anglican form of worship of uniformity and their richly decorated churches. Anglicans recognizes the King as the head of the church. However, Charles himself believes in the Divine Right of Kings, which was disapproved by the parliament. The Divine Right of Kings was a document starting that Kings are sent from God to help rule upon Earth. Charles's purpose of this was to gain more power as people would treat the King like God. There is a big difference between King Charles and Oliver Cromwell's beliefs.
