McDonald's has been the recipient of such awards as Fortune Magazine's Globally Most Admired Company in Food Services in 1998. ComputerWorld Magazine recognized McDonald's as one of the "Top 100 Places To Work in Information Systems" and as "One of the top's in Training. Both ComputerWorld awards were received in 1997. It was also named "the #1 Social Responsible" in fortune Magazine's 2000 list of America's Most Admired Companies.
             One of McDonald's most unique tools is its "Hamburger University". "H.U." is a globally recognized management training center in Oak Brook, Illinois. It is solely designed to instruct personnel employed by the McDonald's Corporation and different independent franchises in the vast viewpoints of business. All of the employees start by learning the first step, which is the "Basics of McDonald's Operations". It was started in 1961 and has evolved quite a bit from the basement of a McDonald's restaurant in Elk Grove Village, Illinois to a 130,000 square foot complex in suburban Illinois. Since that raggedy start Hamburger University has changed it's location twice and the sizes of the individual classes has gone up from a lowly, humble 10 per class to an crazy 200 folks per class. Over 65,000 managers of McDonald's restaurants have completed training at Hamburger University. The "school" has 30 household professors and teachers to educate willing and eager students. Due to the global diversity, translators and speech equipment, computers, and other special mechanical devices enable the professors to communicate material in about 22 languages at the same time. Some of the more popular international training facilities in the country are located in such places as England, Japan, Germany, and Australia.
             As for modern McDonald's success, its system-wide sales total surpassed 40 billion dollars for the first time in its illustrious history in 2000. The difference in customers from 1999 to 2000 was more than a billion.
