For example, when the Lithuanian man lost his job because someone else had paid for it, he was incredibly homesick and couldn't find a job yet he continued to search and not to give up hope. His hard work and perseverance does eventually pay off, and he finds a good job with better wages, as is shown in the following quote:.
             It [joining the union] has raised my wages. The man who worked at my job .
             before the union came was getting through the year with an average of $9 a week. I am getting $11. In my first job I got $5 a week. .
             With the improvement of his job and wages, also came an improvement in his quality of life. He states, "With more time and more money I live much better and I am very happy."" Through his perseverance and faith that there would be better times, even during his hard times, he did eventually persevere. If it weren't for his faith in a better day, he couldn't of persevered, and would of given up when times got tough. Through joining a union and uniting, he found the success that he had been working so hard for in the past. His hard work and faith gave him success.
             The man, Rocco, in "The Life Story of an Italian Bootblack,"" faces a lot of adversity as well. He too has faith in his ultimate success, and through perseverance and hard work finds success as well. From the very beginning of his journey to the United States, Rocco is taken advantage of. On his trip to the United States, he worked on the boat he was taking over to avoid paying for a ticket. Yet, he later found out that the work that he had done for the ship was supposed to have yielded him money, and that he was never paid for his services. Yet, he kept his faith in the system. Rocco got taken advantage of by a man named Bartolo who claimed to be his uncle. Bartolo took Rocco's much of Rocco's money, claiming that he was helping him, yet in reality, Bartotlo was taken advantage of the nave and easy target whom which he saw in front of him.
