The Secret Sharer

 

The captain pretended to be slightly hard of hearing so that Leggat could hear the conversation. When the captain suspected a mild hint of suspicion in his visitor, he invited him to take a tour of his quarters. The other captain declined and left the Sephora. It was becoming harder for the captain to conceal his secret relationship with Leggat from his crew. So Leggat told the captain he had a plan in which the captain would carry the boat close to the reef, and he would maroon himself on one of the little islets. The captain agreed and gave him some money, clothes and a hat. Since they were having bad weather and no wind, the captain said that he was going to go close to the reef to get the land wind as an excuse to allow Leggat to jump off and swim to shore. It was hard so see where the ship was going through the night and the crewmembers began to get worried. Then the captain saw his secret friend's hat, which, by drifting in the water, helped him to discern the direction of the current and to steer the ship on course. His success gave him the respect of the crew and made him feel more confident in his ability to be a captain. .
             The Secret Sharer's title is of great significance in relation to the story. The entire plot what fixed around the fact that once they met the captain and Leggat shared a special bond. There were both physical and spiritual aspects that linked them together. One of the first things that the captain realized both him and Leggat had in common was their appearance. He even mentioned that if one had not known, they could have easily mistaken one for the other. Another thing that they both shared was the fact that they both served on the same ship previously but at different times. Lastly, the most important things that they shared with each other were the things that they shared while on the Sephora. Sharing the same room, living space, clothes, and most significantly, they shared the same secret friendship.
