The Philosophical Definition Of Democracy

"Democracy" is a difficult term to define. What one person defines as an "ideal case" another person refutes as not representative of democracy in the slightest bit. The term has been modified throughout history to fit the diverse forms of government that have titled themselves a democracy and has wavered significantly from its philosophical ideal. Democracy literally means "government by the people" and in Athens the demos were the poorer people. .
Prerequisites for Successful Implementation of Democracy:.
             - In social aspects, there has to be an educated mass with strong sense of political consciousness and the willingness to voice their opinion about state affairs.
             - Economically, the majority of the population has to live beyond subsistence level (i.e. their basic needs are fulfilled) and sufficient employment is required.
             - The government should have sufficient capital to finance democratic movements and activities.
             - Politically, the country should be free from foreign control and autocratic rule in order to establish democratic rule.
             - Territorial integrity also helps facilitating the spread of democracy.
