Accept Now, Or Admit Defeat Later?

I have heard all of my life, time and time again, the endless rant that continues to be far from original. This particular rant hardly strikes the surface of any pride I might feel for the state of Utah, having grown up here all of my life. People seem to have this ongoing perception of Utah that it is in some kind of culturally suspended animation. Individuals with this particular distaste for Utah will sometimes go so far as to say that they are trapped here. I think, that if they were able to make the conscious decision to come here, they can make a similar decision to leave here. If I believe anything, it is that if you want something bad enough, you have to go find it. In Utah, nothing stands in the way of the people for expanding knowledge, intellectually, and culturally. Utah has an "underground" scene for just about everything anyone could be into. That is where I think that the "Culture Shock" for these people begins. They come from a familiar place where they have friends, and "fit in," as long as they were there. Once they arrive in Utah they must start over, and this brings a fear, associated possibly with loneliness or just plain boredom. Culture Shock, in short, is the process of initial adjustment to an unfamiliar environment. I think that culture shock can be an initial process only if dealt with in the right ways. Otherwise, you can be affected by culture shock for your entire life from one experience. I hope that with the studying and research that I have done for this paper I will be able to bring to light the causes and affects of culture shock, the different kinds of culture shock, and examples of studies that put people in situations that have a high potential for causing culture shock. .
Culture Shock affects people so badly in some cases that a person may be susceptible to carrying over that fear from the first experience to any that are to follow. People often do not realize that they are in fact in a state of shock.
