Anti-welfare

Welfare is constantly being taken advantage of, and it needs to be reformed to solve this problem. Welfare in its current state is a huge drain on our economy. The main problem is that it gives money to people who haven't done any work for it. Our Government should look towards a policy like Social Darwinism, because we cannot kill off the weak, but at the same time they must work for their cut. We should at least cut the benefits supplied by welfare. Welfare uses, or should I say, misuses billions of dollars per year. .
When welfare was introduced, it supplied aid to those in need. Welfare aid was mainly given to widowed and divorced mothers, so they could get back on their feet. But today it serves as a paycheck for irresponsible and lazy Americans. .
Welfare programs should show the poor they must learn to fish for themselves if recipients are to eventually work for the money they"re getting. "Food stamps buy food items and work just like money. In 1994, 27 million people used food stamps costing the federal government 24 billion dollars."(Gov. Article) This alone is a good reason we must change our welfare system. .
Seventy percent of poor women said it is "almost always" or "often" true that "poor young women have babies so they can collect welfare." Two thirds said that welfare "almost always" or "often" encourages fathers to avoid family responsibilities. You can see that not only does welfare back teen pregnancy, but it seems to promote it. It has been proven, and even touched on in this class (Mr. Fritz's cousin), that welfare handouts take away a person's desire to work, and their negative attitude towards work, not a shortage of jobs is their cause of unemployment. .
The problem with the welfare system, as stated above, is the fact that often women have children to get the free cash. This means that the only way to go is to set time limits on the welfare system, and to limit the benefits paid out.
