Briefing For A Descent Into Hell

He became a lonely, desperate, determined, naive old man who believed that he too one day would be picked up by the crystal ship. Charles was never born with these traits, beliefs, and characteristics; they were acquired through the experiences and the believed reality during his dreams and hallucinations. One of the best examples of how experiences can effect a personality are Sinbad's constant battles with loneliness; and one of the first experiences of his life as Sinbad the sailor was that of terror. .
"Hovering over these brisk waves, a couple of hundred yards away, was a shining disk we felt a sensation first, all through our bodies then I looked to see if George, who stood nearest to me, was still alive. But he was gone, and when I turned in terror to see where he was, and where the others were, they weren't there. No one. Nothing It had swept away or eaten up or absorbed my comrades and left me there alone." (16- 18).
This experience had a tremendous impact on the development of his forming personality. Now not only has he gone through the traumatization of the loss of all his closest friends because of anliens, he also has felt the pain of loneliness. He becomes paranoid and irrational hopping overboard onto a small raft into a vast sea, "when I was on the raft there was nobody there but me." (32) Now knowledgeable of the hurt, this pain is suffered many times through out the story. On the side of the mountain he met a lion like beat who he befriended and on night he " waited for my (Sinbad's) splendid beasts. But they did not come. And they never came. I did not see them again." (47) Again he found himself all alone when he came across a ruined city and asked himself " where were the people? Why was the enite city abandoned and empty?" (51) Experiences of loneliness ha a great effect on Sinbad's personality, soon he " fell into a misery and a diming of purpose.
