Nearly all employees enter the work force after graduating from high school, universities, or somewhere in between. One view in industry is the belief that once an individual leaves the educational system, the workplace becomes the next source of education for that individual (Powell, 2002). If an organization does not provide further education for its" employees, these very employees will become stagnant and inefficient which consequently will affect profits.
Numerous companies have begun to question the skill level of the current work force. The economy today is rapidly moving into a highly skilled, information dependent industry. This has caused a problem between the types of jobs that are being created and the skill level of the current work force (Tinsley, 2002). Many organizations that are attempting to become more competitive discover their employees do not meet the education levels necessary to survive in this transition to a more skilled workforce. Today's environment provides unlimited challenges with new technologies, global competition, and downsizing which companies face everyday (Tinsley, 2002). Educating the organizations' employees prepares the organization to meet these new challenges head on and provide a more competent workforce that ultimately increases profits.
