Epilepsy

The type and severity of the seizure depend on the location this occurs.
High fevers as a child can also cause epilepsy. Febrile seizures caused by a temperature of 102 or higher have occurred in 10 -15% of children with epilepsy (1). But it is important to know not all febrile seizures cause or are caused by epilepsy. .
To date, doctors and researchers have only identified two epileptic syndromes that can be pinpointed to be caused by one genetic defect. Autosomal dominant nocturnde frontal lobe epilepsy (ADNFLE) is believed to be caused by an alteration in a receptor called neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine (nAChR). These receptors can be found in the hippocampus, neocortex, thalamus, mesolimbic dopamine system and brainstem motor nuclei. In these, they play a role in memory, sensor processing, motor control, and addiction. Animal studies have found that nAChRs are prevalent in the central nervous system and are a large part of the neuromodulation and neurotransmission. Natural polymorphisms contained in the human genomes can disturb proper functioning of nAChRs and provoke the excitation causing a seizure. Some mutations in the genes 4 or ß2 of nAChRs are tied to this.
Epilepsy in children can be case by many factors because children are much more susceptible to many things. Infants and children are at high risk for head trauma which can cause epilepsy. Also viral infections, birth defects difficulties during delivery, and poisoning can cause childhood seizures.
Sleep apnea, a sleeping disorder characterized temporary cessations of breathing during sleep and consequent momentary re-awakenings, and narcolepsy have a casual relationship with epilepsy though researchers do not know what it is yet. Strangely sleep apnea has been misdiagnosed as epilepsy in many patients before because they share such similar symptoms but in actuality it could be a cause of epilepsy. Another possible cause of epilepsy is alcohol and drug abuse or the withdrawal from these things.
