Ethnomusicology

 

            
             Cultural Anthropology is a branch of Anthropology that studies cultures. A culture defines the ideas, values, behavior, and other similar patterns of life style shared by a specific group of people. In Anthropology the study of music in a specific cultural setting is called ethnomusicology.
             Throughout the world there are numerous sub-cultures that have transpired as a direct result of different musical styles. Even though they are a part of the mainstream culture, most of these sub-cultures are in total defiance of it and have created an identity all of their own. These cultures have become prominent because they have changed their language, dress, behavior, values, beliefs etc and have become quite different from the mainstream culture. .
             I have chosen the metal heads or the heavy metal culture as the focal point of my research paper. One of the main reasons for doing so involves my own familiarity with the heavy metal culture and its concepts. The main purpose of this paper is define the culture and to dispel the belief that listening to heavy metal makes a person violent or immoral and to stress that heavy metal culture is not necessarily wrong; just defiant.
             I have used many resources where data collection/ field work is concerned. I've used case studies and conducted interviews and taken guidelines from previously conducted research. The most pertinent information that I've included in this paper was collected by and large through participation and observation. The people I've observed generally include my peers and other students on and off campus.
             Heavy metal, a sub-genre of rock music that is immensely popular world wide has had a significant influence on cultural tastes and styles of its many fans. Not all heavy metal bands are Satanic as believed, but they maintain an image, an appearance which is a connotation of Satanism. Recently, in Morocco, a number of heavy metal fans stood on trial because people believed that they were Satanic.
