Literature Review

Hypothesis: Do young men and women pick to be prostitutes because they are afraid to work honestly or do women and men choose prostitution because of internal moral dilemma, sexual orientation, low or middle class socio-economic status, etc?.
Findings: After comparing several articles on the issues of prostitution and young people, I found that prostitutes whether they be men or women more than often pick this profession because of internal moral dilemmas, sexual orientation, need for money (fast cash), and dysfunctional up-bringing. Prostitution in itself, is not thought of by its' followers as a favorable 'means to an end' but a result of a lack of alternatives for their situation. Females compared to males seem to have a harder time psychologically dealing with the idea of being a prostitute. Males on the other hand, have more difficulty expressing the emotional strain that prostitution produces.
Consequently, when it comes to the unlawful aspects of prostitution men and women both have very little regards for being judged or being considered a criminal. Moreover, their major concern as a prostitute is not breaking the law but whether or not they are right or wrong for choosing to be a prostitute or the structure for their moral reasoning. In addition, not every person that enters the field of prostitution has been psychologically, emotionally, and/or physically abused in some way. The idea of being a prostitute for homosexual and/or heterosexual men and women is chosen because of a desire to fill an emotional, psychological, economical need. Some studies have shown that abuse can sometime be a precursor to prostitution due to a psychological need for some men and women to have an escape from their unpleasant surroundings. However, we cannot guarantee that abuse is something that can be linked to all men and women who are prostitutes. .
Prostitution as a profession can be an act that happens once or repeatedly according to the individual's mind-set at the time of the initial act.
