Ellen Schrecker uses these two examples in the book to stress how the struggle for power and political influence was important in the development of McCarthyism. The courts inability or lack of desire to preserve an individual's first amendment rights was viewed in the book also as one of the many reasons why McCarthyism gains its power. For example, the Supreme Court judges simply keep some of the issues from appearing on their docket. And, in other cases, their decisions are never supported by other measures to make sure that people accused but not convicted are not acted on by the private sector.
             The age of McCarthyism explains the way that communism was introduced into the United States .The cause and effects it had in the nation and the way it reacted to society. Causing many to loose their jobs. The causes of McCarthyism reach back to the 1900's with the first Red Scare. Also known as a witch hunt which led " communism to be known as evil". at the time anyone who participated in such evil was considered illegitimate and were to be excluded from sharing ideas and from jobs. The major arguments and the main idea altogether in this book is definitely the way that communism was introduced into the United States leading to the use of blacklists and having many loose their jobs.
             McCarthyism is a term for the widespread accusations and investigations of suspected Communist activities in the United States during the 1950's, a Wisconsin Republican who paid little attention to laws and justice and was a lot more interested in making things in business easy for his friends, so therefore McCarthy started to use intimidation and unsubstantiated accusations in the name of fighting communism, this got to be known as McCarthyism. He made numerous charges, usually with little evidence that certain public officials and other individuals were Communists or cooperated with Communists.
