This would fact would cause her great suffering, as did the miscarriages that resulted. (Tuchman, 3).
What followed was months of painful, expensive recovery and therapy. Frida was bedridden for three months, and most of her misery came from the severe isolation and loneliness that came from this. Unable to return to school, and with only the use of her hands, Frida took up painting after the accident to help pass the time in bed. (Barnet-Sanchez, 2).
It was shortly after when she began to regain her strength back that she began to be very active in the politics of the day. This is most likely how she met her future husband, esteemed muralist Andre Rivera. Theirs was a true love story filled with chaos, infidelities and separations. They were married on August 21, 1929 to the weariness of her parents and some of her friends who were not sure the odd couple with eleven years age difference were right for each other. Rivera was Frida's biggest fan and most advid supporter of her work. (Barnet-Sanchez, 2) Frida proved to be a devoted wife, she brought him lunch everyday, bathed him and cooked for him. In one work of art that she did, her husband is resting on her lap naked, clearly indicating the maternal side of their relationship, she felt that he was a child in some ways and needed to be cared for. This is significant because it proved that she was not all tomboy and hardshelled, she did have a nurturing motherly side. (Tuchman, 3) Although this nurturing side would never be realized to it's full potential, as Frida was unable to carry a baby to full term due to her accident with the bus. He whole life she felt like she fit in more with the boys, and her many miscarriages and the realization that she was unable to have children was the ultimate insult to her femininity. .
Self Portrait with Cropped Hair by Frida Kahlo symbolizes through surrealism her evolution towards independence, just like the movement of women towards liberation and greater social status.
