There are many people that have the same concerns in finding themselves. People want to be real with themselves, with nothing to hide from anyone, as well as trying to make everyone else around them happy. Instead of being true to myself, I was being true to others" emotions and feelings and I never progressed to find a good group of friends until I overcame that emotion of fear and insecurity. In the poem, "And Your Soul Shall Dance," a girl is portrayed walking to school in her uniform. What she is thinking to herself is that she wants to leave this dull and boring land of dust and machinery, and go to some place foreign and exciting where she "might be kissed by someone with smooth, artistic hands" (Lines 21, 22). This girl is not afraid of being real with herself and the way her feelings lead her. She is not worried about the thoughts and feelings of others in the least bit, but is rather taken away by this mystic place she dreams of going to someday. She knows she belongs in a group that glorifies beauty and she is completely confident that she will be accepted. I believe that in finding the right crowd to fit in with, one must be completely true to the emotions felt and in doing so, it also helps to find one's self in the process. .
Besides the emotions that direct us, there may be other external forces such as parents who happen to believe in something different or doing something differently that affect us in seeking out who we really are. Now, what comes to the surface is the issue of differentiation from parents because many times parents believe different things from what we believe. All our lives, we are raised up by our parents and they instill in us the moral and practical principles they see fit, but that doesn't make it necessarily right. In the movie Billy Elliot, Billy carries a passion for dancing, but he faces obstacles from his own father and brother that strongly discourage him not to go through with a dancing career.
