Then he dismembered them and made his meal, gaping and crunching like a mountain lion- everything: innards, flesh, and marrow bones. We cried aloud, lifting our hands to Zeus; powerless, looking on at this, appalled; but Kyklops went on filling up his belly with manflesh and great gulps of whey.(310).
The scene with the Cyclops was one of the most graphic, disgusting, and vivid displays of the violence which was so prevalent in The Odyssey. The depth in which Homer went to show exactly how the men were killed, and virtually every move a Cyclops would make when feasting on live human. In this instance however, his violence resulted in more violence by Odysseus, which in turn resulted in more violence by Polyphemus father, Poseidon. All of this, and we are only half way through the story. Poseidon's wrath makes the rest of this journey extremely tough on Odysseus, and time and time again Odysseus would find himself lost at sea, or trapped on another island. Finally, when Odysseus thought that his journey had ended as well as all of the death and killing, he had to come to the realization that the worst was yet to come.
When Odysseus reached his home, he could not let it be known that he had returned. There were many suitors, living in his own home, who for years had been desecrating the sanctity of his house. They disrespected his home, killed and ate all of his animals, and totally disrespected Penelope, Odysseus" wife. To make the situation even better, these beasts plotted to murder Odysseus" only son, Telemachos. Upon receiving news of this, Odysseus", with the help of grey-eyed Athena, goddess of war, began their own plot. Athena had been advising and saving Odysseus throughout his entire quest back to Ithaca, and nothing changed once he had actually come back. They began a plot to slaughter everyone who violated Odysseus" home, and everything in it, including all the women that sided with the suitors.
