Prison Overcrowding

Tension among prisoners is actually a problem that is partially caused by the overcrowding of prisons. Many prison managers will keep prisoners confined in their cells for long periods of time in an effort to reduce the effects of overcrowding. Allowing prisoners to move freely and socialize helps to reduce a considerable amount of the tension brought about because of overcrowding. Reducing tension may not correct the problem of overcrowding; however it will make prison conditions considerably better thus allowing prison managers and their subordinates to exercise greater control of the prisons. A second option that will actually create more space in the prison is to introduce prisoner leave programs. Such a program could allow for more space during the daytime, as prisons could allow prisoners to leave for a regular work day or visits to families. This of course could not be implemented in a high security prison or with any prisoners that pose a threat, but it would be a perfect solution for prisoners nearing an end of their prison term as it could allow them to readjust to normal life. Another option that would help reduce stress on prisons due to overcrowding would be to improve the early release system. Releasing elderly prisoners, especially terminally ill prisoners, would allow some prisons to free up additional space. This would also reduce the burden on prisons, no longer requiring them to worry about the medical treatment of these elderly prisoners. The early release system can also be improved through an effective use of parole. Parole offers a few advantages that make it a very worthy consideration for reducing prison populations. First, parole offers prisoners a substantial incentive for behaving and therefore will lead to a better behaved prison population. Second, by releasing prisoners parole will help reduce the number of prisoners being detained in the prison.
