Tripod Fish

Some are filled almost completely with water like jellyfish, squid, etc. Many fish have a swim bladder which contains a volume of gas that can be adjusted as they rise and lower themselves in the water column. The fish, in these pressures, can also have an illness which kills them. When they are caught in nets, and brought to the surface, their swim bladder expands and they burst. I have chosen a fish that lives at these depths, but has little information known about it. This fish is called a tripod fish, and can also be called an abyssal spider fish. .
             This fish is extremely unusual, and gets its name from its three, long, extended fins that reach to the bottom, which can be longer than the fish itself. These fins allow the fish to walk on the bottom without sinking into the ooze. They also possess pectoral fins which are like the antennas of an ant. They are sensors in order to detect prey, predators, and movement of the water. These fish usually feed on plankton. Many of the fishes tend to feed on anything they can find since there is not much food at such a deep depth. The main adaptation that these fish have is their tiny eyes or no eyes at all. They have evolved over the years to have little or no eyesight, because the waters are so dark that they do not need the sense of seeing. Also, their eyes are on the top of their head, because they only need to see what is above them. These fish can be very small, and generally all fish at this depth do move around very much, and if they do then very slowly, in order to conserve energy. These fish also have an adaptation of reproducing. They are hermaphrodites, which mean they have both male and female sexual organs. Tripod fish are remarkable animals and have been able to adapt to the harsh climate of the bathypelagic zone. .
