Renegades

The song Renegades of Funk by Rage against the Machine is about people, who have altered the course of history by changing the system. In the song the band mentions two great men of the civil rights period who made America better for black people. "Then the renaissance came, times continued to changes nothing stayed the same there were always renegades,"" "Dr Martin Luther King, Malcolm X they were renegades of their time and age-(de la Rocha). Malcolm X and Martin Luther King are the two most famous black men in the Civil Rights era of the 1950's and 1960's. Both men shared the same goal of wanting equal rights for all men and woman in America. They had several things in common in their lives, but were different in many ways as well. Even though both men wanted the same goal of equality, they had different styles of approaching it.
Martin Luther King was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta Georgia. His original name was Michael King Junior, and when he was only five years old his father changed both their names after the Protestant reformer. King grew up with equality in his blood. His grandfather was Rev. A.D Williams. In 1906, along with W.E.B Du Bois, Williams helped create the Georgia Equal Rights League; a civil rights group formed to stop lynching and segregation (Garrow). Since King was exposed to the Du Bois style of the civil rights movement this could be the reason for trying to get the white people to help his cause. In 1917 Williams formed the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP. King's father was also involved in the civil rights movement. He was the president of Atlanta's chapter of the NAACP that his father started (Garrow). His father was also the pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, which was one of the most distinguished churches in Atlanta. When King was in college, at Morehouse University, he decided to follow his father and become a minister (Levy 133). King then started going to Crozer Theological Seminary and was ordained a minister in 1947.
