J.E.B. Stuart


            
             was a well-known Confederate Commander in the 1800's. because his full name was James Ewell Brown Stuart, even though it is not mentioned a lot. He was born on February 6, 1833 at Patrick County, Virginia and died on May 12, 1864 at Yellow Tavern, Virginia. He was originally educated at home, then he attended Emory College and Henry College from 1848 to 1850. In 1851 he entered West Point, and ended up graduating thirteenth in his class. .
             After Stuart's graduation, new experiences started before him. He was appointed 2nd lieutenant in the Mounted Rifles. Then, in the following October, He was sent to Texas. In March 1863 he was assigned to the 1st United States cavalry and was there for six years. While he was there he met a woman by the name of Flora Cooke, she was the daughter Philip St. George Cooke, who just happened to be the future Union General. He ended up marring Flora Cooke and they were very happy together. While he was away in 1853, he started working on an invention. His invention was a device to hold a sword in a belt. In the summer of 1859 he went to the War Department where he tried to sell his invention to the army. Then Robert E. Lee called for him. Lee was Stuart's superintendent. Later, he went back to Kansas. But in April of 1861 his home state, Virginia seceded from the Union. .
             He decided he wanted to resign from the U.S. army and joined the Confederate Army in While in this army he held many different positions such as, Captain of Cavalry (May 24,1861), Colonel, 1st Virginia Cavalry (July 16, 1861), Brigadier General (September 24, 1861), Major General (July 25, 1862), Cavalry Brigade Commander, Army of Northern Virginia (October 22, 1861 - July 28, 1862), Cavalry Division Commander, Army of Northern Virginia (July 28, 1862 - September 9, 1863), Temporary Commander of Jackson's 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia (May 3-6, 1863), Cavalry Corps Commander, and lastly Army of Northern Virginia (September 9, 1863 - May 11, 1864).
