Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe

There are several main characters in Fannie Flagg's novel, "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café,"" all of which undergo a great amount of change throughout the novel. However, Evelyn, the 48-year-old friend of 83-year-old Ninny Threadgoode, seems to become a completely different person by the novel's conclusion. When Evelyn meets Ninny for the first time, she impatiently eats several candy bars and wonders "if the old woman beside her was ever going to shut up- (8). She also has very low self-esteem. She considers herself ugly and fat, and often "wondered where her group was, the place where she fit in- (40). However, after spending many Sundays talking to the encouraging Ninny Threadgoode, Evelyn wakes up one morning realizing, "that she was actually looking forward to going to the nursing home- (134). Ninny simply talks about her past and warms her with stories about how such a small café, the Whistle Stop Café, used to be her home. As Evelyn becomes more comfortable with Ninny, she starts referring to her as her "friend."" Evelyn uses her new happy attitude to go on a diet. After nine days of eating healthily, she wakes up feeling "in complete control of her life, tall and thin, and when she moved, she felt willowy and graceful- (233). Unfortunately, she takes a turn for the worst when an immature boy at the supermarket calls her a "stupid cow,"" leaving her feeling "old and fat and worthless all over again- (235). She becomes a bitter woman that calls herself Towanda the Avenger. "Towanda was able to anything she wanted [she] punched out Paul for writing that women should remain silent She allowed all rats to chew all slumlords to death she and her staff of crack chemical scientists would find a cure for cancer and invent a pill that would let you eat all you want and not gain weight- (240-241). She even lets herself crash her car six times into the car of two girls that had been mean to her, simply stating, "let's face it, honey, I'm older than you are and have more insurance than you do- (289).
