It is clear that if medical attention were promptly administered following an injury, the level of pain would be reduced. The medical profession has indicated that aggressive pain management and control of an injury can yield both short and long-term benefits. Taking aspirin prior to physical activity following an injury can reduce the amount of pain. However, recovery time is also prolonged if a similar accident/injury occurs, or if the previous injury is stressed and not given adequate time to heal. It has also been demonstrated that post-operative patients able to self-medicate with small intravenous doses of analgesic medication experience less pain and are more satisfied with pain relief. These patients also tend to be discharged earlier from the hospital compared to patients given the same drug on an, "as needed basis". .
             Medication is clearly not the only way to control and manage pain. Acupuncture has made significant inroads in the United States in the past few years. There have been many studies demonstrating the potential usefulness of acupuncture, and many of these studies provide sound results based on the study design and sample.
