Frankenstein

My first impression of the novel was that I didn't like it. I normally hate reading science fiction books so I didn't have a good attitude about reading Frankenstein. It started out very slow but to my surprise it was not what I thought it would be about. I thought it was going to be a gory book full of blood but it turned out to be about a determined man, Victor, who whose life was destroyed by his own creation.
Frankenstein, the creation named after Victor, was an evil being. Not because he was built that way but because that's all he knew. He was very lonely and had no one to love or be loved by in return. I think out of pure jealousy Frankenstein killed Victor's best friend, younger brother, and fiancé so Victor too, would feel the pain of being just as lonely as Frankenstein was.
Victor's whole family destroyed, he decided to leave his hometown and all the horrible memories behind him forever. I don't blame him at all. I could never bear to live in place where such tragedies took place. Victor followed the monster for months trying to catch him and get revenge, which I thought was brave. He tracked many messages and clues the monster left behind; I would have been so angry, this creation had killed everything that was dear to me and now he was running from me! On Victor's journey he met Walton; finally someone Victor could confide in. I think this gave him much relief. I can't possibly imagine how awful it would have been to have to keep everything a secret and deal with all the pain, loss, and guilt all by himself.
The many different views of Victor were interesting. Frankenstein saw him as an irresponsible creator, too self-centered to care for anyone else's feelings or needs; Frankenstein hated Victor for the fact that he had people to love and people that loved him in return thus the reason why Frankenstein felt the need to kill the people he did. Victor saw himself as overly confident and overly ambitious; if he hadn't been so sure in his creation maybe all the horrible things that happened, wouldn't have, and his life would have been normal still.
