The Moral Impoverishmant of India

In analysing a primary source there are many factors that must be taken into consideration to determine the source's reliability and usefulness to a historian. The memorandum of Dadabhai Naoroji entitled "The Moral Impoverishment of India" discusses the effects that British colonisation had on Indian society and the relationship between the British and Indian people. This article is extremely biased towards the Indian nationalistic view of the role of Britain during the nineteenth century. Secondary sources both support and oppose Dadabhai Naoroji's memorandum in examining the role the British leaders in India and the influence they had over the society.
Dadabhai notes that the European colonists occupied almost all the highest positions of the government and through this they obtained India's material and moral prosperity. He also claims that they took wealth of experience from the elders of the nation, "and a sad, sad loss this is!" This idea of British control in India is agreed with by Vinayshil Gautam as he calls this scheme "the monopolistic system of the English". The observation that the colonists held the majority of the positions within the government in India is very reliable as there is evidence within the previously stated secondary source to support it and there is no bias apparent in the statement. Rothermund takes this remark one step further in giving reasons for the lack of Indians in top governmental roles, "the education system introduced by the British has undoubtedly given rise to a substantial educated elite, but this elite was trained to pass examinations and to aspire to positions in government service and could, therefore, hardly be expected to provide a dynamic lead to the country". .
Education is another aspect of Indian life that Dadabhai Naoroji focuses on in his memorandum. He states that, "The thousands that are being sent out by the universities find themselves in a most anomalous position.
