The Chocolate War

            
             In the novel "The Chocolate War" a character that helps develop the plot is Jerry Renault. The story is based on the students selling chocolates. Jerry as a character plays an integral role in the plot. The following essay will outline how Jerry plays an important part in the plot.
             Jerry helps develop the plot by an assignment given to him by "The Vigils". He has to refuse to sell the chocolates from Brother Leon's classes. This assignment is given to Jerry from Archie the leader of "The Vigils".
             This assignment makes Jerry's life a living hell with every day worrying about the assignment and saying no to Brother Leon and watching and looking at his response with his anger and hate inside building up.
             Jerry comes to realise after the given "Vigils" assignment is over that he is going to keep saying no! For selling the chocolates this makes Jerry standout as an individual "no means you don't wish to sell the chocolates, that you refuse to participate" Jerry goes against Trinity tradition and is alone in doing so.
             Jerry's act towards not selling the chocolates even after the attempts of "The Vigils" to make him sell, Jerry refused. He started to wonder if he had made a huge mistake his locker had been destroyed like every one was out to get him "he closed his locker quickly so no one would see the damage he felt ashamed.
             To conclude Jerry helps develop the plot but the story "The Chocolate War" is also based about Jerry's individuality and how he creates significance by standing up to what he believes in that is if students don't want to sell the chocolates, then they don't have to. This makes him an individual and it makes him an outcast of the school. This is because Jerry goes against Trinity Tradition.
