I researched all the radio stations in the Colorado Springs market based solely on ratings. Regardless of what I think may be the best stations for 50 and under isn't necessarily what the ratings indicate. The following information is based on the Fall 2002 Arbitron Ratings, generic daypart of Mon-Sun 6A-Mid. The 3 highest rated radio stations for overall 50 and under are in order as follows: KKMG w/ 14.0, KILO w/ 8.6, and KKLI w/ 7.2. Listeners 18-34 breaks like this: KKMG w/22.1, KILO w/ 13.6, and KVUU w/ 7.1. Listeners 25-49 breaks down like this: KKMG at number one again w/10.4, KKLI w/ 8.0 and KKFM w/ 7.6. The frontrunner in all dayparts and 18-49 age group is KKMG 98.9 Magic-Fm. Second and third rankings differ between ages. .
KKMG has been number 1 across the board in ratings for 6 straight years in a row and they dominate the marketplace due to the fact that there is little to no competition with their same product. If I was to start a station in this market it would be new competition for Magic-Fm. It would be a CHR/Urban mix. This market is in desperate need for a station with more Urban music in it. Many of the Colorado Springs listeners who listen to Magic also crossover to Denver's Urban station KS 107.5. They get all the pop/top40 they need from Magic and then satisfy their hip-hop needs with KS 107.5. I would create a station to pull listeners and ratings from both stations, primarily Magic-Fm. The stations that I will have to compete against for this age range will be KKLI- K-Lite 106.3 which is an adult contemporary format which has good numbers for the workday/midday shift. The other competitor I will have is KKFM - 98.1 Classic Rock, which is also heavy with the workforce. The main competitor, of course, will be 98.9 Magic-Fm which is strong in all its dayparts. .
