This fall begins in the mind and comes upon him suddenly with little warning. We can see that because the sadness is dim in nature, only whispering and taunting, this feeling has not completely overcome him. Described as "blind," these thoughts seem somewhat unidentifiable and are distracting enough to cloud Wordsworth's vision and keep him from fully functioning in this world of beauty. Joy is robbed when the fear of the unknown or unforeseen overcomes us. .
This loss of joy is also a direct result of a loss of faith both in nature and in the divine. When Wordsworth thinks of returning to the "real world," far from a life immersed in nature, he forgets that it is this vision of nature and the divine that sustains him in times of absence. Specific fears of "solitude, pain of heart, distress, and poverty" overtake Wordsworth (35). Instead of embracing his possible fate and recognizing the opportunity for growth Wordsworth shrinks back. He withdraws into an inner trap of self that is distant from nature, the divine, and humanity. By loosing faith and perspective Wordsworth is robbed of his joy. He is unable to see his connection to nature and to the divine as sufficient enough to sustain him in periods of distress. .
The battle is so inward that Wordsworth is unable to fully connect with humanity. During a conversation with his new aquaintance, the leech gatherer, Wordsworth shares, "The old man still stood talking by my side; / But now his voice to me was like a stream / scarce heard"(106-108). Wordsworth's attention fade in and out here in the conversation and all of the leech gatherer's words seem to meld together and form a stream of unheard words. Because the leech gatherer's state of being, sickly and impoverished, is the embodiment of Wordsworth's fears he is unable to remain focused. So absorbed is Wordsworth that he almost misses the message of life that the leech gather brings.
