Moon on the Water

In the short story "Moon on the Water", the character Kyoko is a woman who has had to take care of her husband almost his whole life. Her first husband dies and she carries on with being obsessed with the mirror. Kyoko's second husband gives her advice, and I agree with him. He gives her the advice, " A sound love dwells only in a sound person." (Kawabata, 357) He says this because she is a very unhappy person and love cannot dwell in a person that is not content. The fact that the names of both husbands are never said is to show that her life is filled with isolation and loneliness. Her whole life was filled with the sickness of her first husband and the mirror symbolizes her escape from all this. The mirror gave her, a since of adventure and in a way she could go to a new world with no worries and not have to stay and deal with everything. As a reader I feel that the advice that her second husband gives her is appropriate. I feel that she is lonely and needs to get some help. She is not psycho she just needs a little help. I would give the same advice to Kyoko because I would realize that she is a little obsessed with the mirror and not a very "sound" human being. How could she love anyone or be content with her marriage if she is not happy? The whole story can kind of be tied together with the title "Moon on the Water", the theme of reflection and the husband's advice. I think that what her second husband told her was sort of like a reflection in that if you are happy or life is well then things will "reflect" or go your way. .
