A Look Into the Knight

They would bicker between one another about who would get to marry her and this built a strong hatred between them. Then one day Theseus's best friend, a duke named Perotheus, came to make his usual visit and noticed Arcite in the prison cell. He had known Arcite for many years when he was in Thebes and grew to like him. Perotheus made a deal with Thebes and Arcite was freed under one condition; he could never return to anywhere ruled by Theseus. .
Chaucer creates a lot of irony in this part of the story. One knight who is in love with Emily is imprisoned so he sees her everyday knowing he is stuck behind walls and will never be released while the other knight is banned from her home and he cannot even see her. This makes it hard to decide which situation would be the worst. Another thing that makes it hard to decide which knight's side to choose is the fact that both knights are equal in every way. They get in numerous fights throughout the story and neither one is able to kill the other. It is amazing how much the love for a woman changed relations between these two. They were best friends and when she came between them they became each other's greatest enemy. .
The love for Emily seems to strongly motivate both Palemus and Arcite. Palemus stares out his cell window everyday as she walks by, dreaming of what things would be like if they were ever able to be together. Arcite is usually a very loyal man to his word but he breaks the law and returns to Athens trying to win the love of Emily. He even sinks low enough to trick Theseus. He aged over the few years before he returned to Athens and was not recognizable so he changed his name and was hired to be Theseus's squire. .
In the end of the tale Palemon and Arcite are found fighting in the forest by Theseus. This is where Palemon tells Theseus that his squire was a fake and it was really Arcite. Theseus was amazed at the lengths the two would take for the love of Emily so he makes a deal with them.
